HARRY BROWNE.

It's with great sadness that  we have learned of the death of a long time member of UMAC, Harry Browne.

Harry was a former committee member and supporter of many a club fly in and along with Stephen his son, would suffer many a blustery damp day and entertain us and fly when many wouldn't get out of their cars!

Harry built many a fine example of the full size aircraft he came across when he worked for Short's at Sydenham. One example (Sea Vixen) was flown by Stephen at the World Jet Masters in 2007 one of the very few 'built' models entered in the event and was well place in the overall competition.

Harry will be greatly missed by all at the Ulster Model Aircraft Club and our thoughts are with his family Carrie, Stephen and Nigel.

THE

Ulster Scale Association

Clifford Mc Ilwee asked if I could pass this email on to all members, I hope that some of you will be able to attend as I think something like this is well over due. Our club has already been asked to hold an event next year. So come along and show your support, myself and a few other members are hoping to attend and it would be good to see more of you there.

There will be a fly-In, for scale models on 20th Sept 09, at Ballymoney mfc.

This is to try and get all scale enthusiasts together, and have a chat to see what can be done in this part of the country, to move things forward, from the “nothing happens” situation we find ourselves in now, as opposed to a few years ago.

Seamus, [from the Letterkenny] club, is trying for a date closer than the one above as well, but, if we get the support, a new association can be born on 20th sep

As you receive this, please make available to your club members, and we hope to see you all there.

Eamon Keenan, and Ray Jennings have agreed to come up, and offer advice on flying / building, documentation etc, but no competitions can be organised for next year, till we see what support we have.

If things do take off, we will be looking to organise a few fly-ins and comps [ low-key] around the clubs in 2010.

If you”d like more details, or, if you”d like to see your club hosting one of these, please e-mail or give Seamus and myself a ring.

All types of scale models are welcome, and we are especially looking for the younger flyer, who would like to learn more about building, finishing and flying.

Thanks for reading, and hoping for your support.

                         Wings & wheels 09

Myself Colin ,Owen and Jack went to this years show here´s a few words and a few pics from Colin..

The usual trip to Wings and Wheels incorporated a change to our normal routine this year, choosing to attend Wings and Wheels on the Sunday. Michael unfortunately couldn’t make it this year and a friend of Owens, Jack, took up the offer to travel with us!
We decided to visit Duxford Imperial War Museum on the Saturday, and after our pilot and navigator (who won’t be in the front next year!) took a slight deviation from our route (I think at one stage we passed a sign for Glasgow!), we arrived just before lunchtime and began the tour around this vast site.
We took a few photo’s so I wont go into what we seen but suffice to say there is plenty to see and do and all tastes in aircraft are catered for. The American flight Museum is crammed full of planes and would take a few hours just to take it all in.

 D.H. Rapide

The Historical Flight Company offer short flights in Tiger Moths and the D.H. Rapide, we took the chance to go up in the Rapide even though a few of us where suffering from the night before (Jet Lag). This flight was well worth it as there aren’t too many Rapide’s around and the price was acceptable for the 20 min. flight (noisy, rattley, the smell of doped fabric, Ahhh!, and if you get the seat next to the door your in charge of the fire extinguisher and evacuation !) Great stuff! The day flew in and the staff where very helpful (letting us step over the ropes to get up close to take pic’s and touch ! .. if I had a spare million or two). I would recommend a visit if your in that part of England and remember to bring a good camera!.

You can find more photo's of our trip to the Imperial War Museum Duxford and Wings & Wheels in the club pic's page..

First class, Phelim now i always new that there was a better use for those engines than sticking them in a plane.

                 SCRAMBLE & BBQ

                (BRING YOUR OWN)
The weather hasn't been that good for the competitions this year, but fingers crossed for this one.
The Scramble competition will take place on  Friday 12th June and starts at 5 p.m, this competition is about the pilot that spends the LEAST TIME ON THE

GROUND after each landing.
It requires accurate landings and the ability to get the model airborne again as quickly as possible.
So get you model ready, get your BBQ food and come along.
If you cant rember the rules, look in the events page and click on the rules beside the Scramble date.

Myself and the members from UMAC would like to congratulate Shane McGirr from Letterkenny MFC on wining this years 3DX heli competition that was held at Craigavon MFC.
This is a fantastic win for young Shane ,not only is he just 13 but he's  only been flying heli's for 2 years.
Shane's been coming up to our Easter fly-in the past couple of years with Seamus and Christopher.
(by the way Christopher also done well by finishing 8th)

                           Pole 2 Pole Fun Race

Pole 2 Pole Fun Race is in a weeks time Saturday 16th May.

As most of you know it is what it says in the title "fun race".

The rules are the same as last year, eight times round the poles and the fastest out of the two rounds wins.  It's as easy as that.

Any plane can take part "even Easy Stars"as I said it's fun and should be a good days flying.
Hope to see you there.

Just a quick word letting you know that the venue has been changed to Craigavon MfC

Click on the link and the map will show you how to get to there field... MAP

This is for all the Heli people .

I got this email forwarded from David Nolan.

Hi to all

Following the great success of the 2007 and 2008 events preparations have begun for 3DX Ireland 2009. The venue has returned to Tarsan Lane, Portadown in N.Ireland for 2009 (which was also the venue for the 2007 event) and will be held on 15th, 16th and 17th May 2009.

The competition itself will be held over the Saturday and Sunday with the preliminary rounds for all pilots held on the Saturday with the top pilots going through to the finals on the Sunday. The whole day on Friday, and the rest of Saturday and Sunday where the competition is not being held is open to all heli pilots to just fly and have fun.

The competition format is essentially the same as before with all pilots being asked to fly a three minute Freestyle round (which can be to music if required) and a Set Manoeuvre round which will be any five manoeuvres chosen from the current 3DX Set list where the total ‘K’ factor of the manoeuvres cannot total any more than 6. The current list is to be found at http://www.fly3dx.com/setManoeuvres.htm

A typical example would be to choose three manoeuvres with a ‘K’ factor of 1 and two manoeuvres with a ‘K’ factor of 1.5 to give a total ‘K’ factor of 6. Other combinations are possible and lower totals of ‘K’ are also acceptable.

The competition is open to all pilots from the island of Ireland only.

More information will follow shortly on the application process, prizes, judges and special guest demo pilots.

Keep an eye on www.3dxireland.com for more info.

Please can you pass this mail onto anyone else you feel it may interest and if possible ask them to reply to to be added to the mailing list.

I look forward to seeing you all at 3DX Ireland 2009.

                                                    Letterkenny fly-in 09

A few of us went down to Letterkenny for the Grant Capell Memorial Fly-In .

We had a great day and we were blissed by fantastic weather (we actually had to use sun cream!!).

I would just like to thank Letterkenny M.F.C. for there invite and there hospitality.

Here's a few pic..

                                             Denis O'Hara Memorial Fly-in

 (25mph winds)

It had to be our Easter fly-in, well it wasn't that bad for the middle of April.
However, this didn't seem to put anyone off as this was one of the largest turn outs that we have had for a few years, not just from our own club but from other clubs around the north as well (not forgetting our friends from Letterkenny who are holding  their Grant Capell Memorial Fly-In this Sunday 19th). There was also a visit from Daves RC Model for all of those bits and bobs that come in handy.   Mathew Poots has his Hangar 9 Sukhoi 26 at this event and gave a fantastic display for all to see.  We had another great display from David Nolan with  his 3D Heli.  These displays showed why they are among the best of RC pilots out there.

This years Denis O'Harra trophy went to Stephen Brown for being the first person to fly a turbine powered jet at the new site.

We would like to thank all who attended this event and showed their support, it was greatly appreciated.

Committee & Members of the Ulster Model Aircraft Club

C/O Mr Phelim Lundy

To All,

I would like to thank UMAC for their very kind contribution to my dad and I’s trip to the Invitational Tucson Aerobatic Shootout. This was very much appreciated and it is good to know that we have support & friendship from a local club.

I always enjoy attending UMAC events & try to get to as many as I can (although sometimes it’s hard to fit everything in). I was also honoured to be invited to give a presentation at your recent AGM, I think everyone enjoyed it and I enjoyed relaying my experiences of Tucson to your members.

I look forward to attending the Denis O’Hara Mem. Fly-in at Easter and hopefully at many events before and after.

Best wishes and a Happy New Year,

Matthew Poots
