Harry Ferguson himself would have been chuffed with the turn out that attended Newcastle on the 7th and 8th of August, with crowds of around 100,000 filling the streets to see the Red Arrows exhilarating display.

We had been in talks with Newcastle council from last year as to the events that were happening that weekend and if the weather held up we knew that we were in for a treat not just from the Red Arrows but from all the events including Heli flights around the Mournes`.

Air Cadets from  Ballynahinch were bringing along a Hunter aircraft cockpit. A fly past from a CASA from the Irish air force were also scheduled along with many other displays (Not forgetting the static display from UMAC).

As the date approached we had arranged to meet up outside the Civic centre around 9.30am to allow plenty of time to set up the marquee and get the models assembled.  There was a large selection of models on display  to include large scale models, world war 2 models, large turbine jets, night flying Zaggies and not forgetting , Helicopters. Owen Hillis brought his beautiful  Vario Bell 212 and for me the show stopper had to  be Davy Murchies  Vairo Lama with a 120 Jakadofsky turbine (this has to be one of the largest if not the largest turbine heli in the North).

It wasn’t long until people started to gather around the marquee to have a look at the models and engines put out on display and most of the afternoon there was a line of at least three people deep looking and asking questions which keep us busy until the Red Arrows started doing their thing.   Sunday started off much the same as Saturday and we decided not to put the marquee up, this made things a lot more open for the public to view the models and seem to make things more relaxed giving us more time to chat, I had spoken to modellers from Holland, England and the USA who were over on holiday .

The whole weekend was fantastic and I was amazed at the amount of people showing interest in taking up this wonderful hobby of ours.

More photo's can be found on the pic's page..__________________________________________________________________________

                      More displays held recently

A few weekends ago, myself and a few other members took part in two static displays, the first was on Friday evening at Methodist College playing fields. This event was run by Downey House primary school and had a lot going on. Even though it was a bit cold there was a lot of interest in the models that we had on display.

Saturday turned out to be a far better day weather wise for our second display.   As soon as we had set up we were inandated with querries and question  about the models on show and enquiries with regards the club.  The lord mayor of Newtownabbey stopped by for a chat (never giving up a chance to have his photo taken Jim McGowan had his taken with her.)

                              ..

We have the last display of the year on 7th & 8th of August in Newcastle, the Harry Ferguson (festival of flight), this should be a first class event not to be missed especially on Saturday as the Red arrows will be flying over.  We have been asked to put on a static display at this event.  If anyone is interested in helping out then please contact me.

  Denis O'Hara Memorial Fly-in 2010

                                  A few photo's from last years fly-in

Well, the Easter fly-in has come and gone or should i say blown away.

If I thought last year was windy it was nothing compared to this year, the Met office gave a forecast of 23-24 mph and gusts up to 38mph and they weren’t wrong.

Although it was windy it never stopped a few brave pilots taking to the air and flying continued all day..  I  got up to the site about 10am and a few of the members had already been flying.  Safty was the first to get a flight (he will do anything for a Easter egg) with his sky scooter.  Once again Mathew Poots put on a fantastic display with his Sukhoi and David Nolan flew his new Heli (i think it was a fury 55) and he never held anything back,  if you’ve seen David flying  3D you will know what I mean.

Stephen Brownes' boomerang had no problem with the strong winds and young

Greg Hewit had a  great time throwing  his limbo dancer around and as usual never gave his engine time to cool before he was up flying again. Greg clocked up more flights than anyone and was awarded the Denis O’Hara Memorial Cup.

As ever our friends from other clubs showed up to show their support and we would like to thank all of those who turned up and enjoyed the day.

The dates for this years Scottish Model Air show has just been released, May 22nd & 23rd.

The club are thinking,  depending on numbers, of running a trip to this event.  The cost of which is anticipated to be in the  region of  £50.

This amount  will cover the return ferry crossing , transfers to and from the Air show plus a three course meal at the Craignelder   Hotel , Strannaer.  A menu will be available before departure with a choice of three meals.

The cost of the show is not  included in this price as we are unable , at the present time, to get the cost of the  entrance to the show as it has not been published yet  (from memory, the cost of this show has been approximately £7 in previous years).

Anyone wishing to take part in this  trip should contact  myself  or a  member of the committee  to secure your place.

We shall be asking for a £25 non-refundable deposit to be paid  by the 1st of March , to allow us to book the ferry.  The reminder to be paid by the  end of April.

This event has been attended in previous years by  fellow members of our club who can confirm that it is a very enjoyable day and  much fun can be had .

Gerry Smyth

                                                     2010

2010 is here and Christmas has come and gone and i hope you got all the goodies you wanted over the holidays (you know the ones you have been hinting about ).

On Saturday i went up to the flying site (2 Jan) hoping to be the first to fly in 2010, I took my daughter Katie with me as Santa brought her the Pink plane she was after and we were both in a hurry to have a go. We got up early to find a lovely white stuff on the ground, no winds and  clear blue skies.

Soon after our first flight Steve (flyaway) Farmer and Louis arrived and after a quick chat they gave me the news that Stewarty Clarke and a few others had been up on new years day, ah well .

Well done to Stewarty and the boys..
